2015 ANZAC Day assembly

Bethany College’s ANZAC Day Assembly was held this year on Thursday 30th April.  2015 marks the Centenary of ANZAC. We mark a century of service and sacrifice, encompassing all wars, conflicts and peacekeeping operations in which Australia and New Zealand have been involved. In particular, Australians commemorated the 100th anniversary of the landing of Australian and New Zealand troops on the Gallipoli peninsula in 1915. The long, bitter contest, with its brave deeds and sacrifices, attracted world attention and Australia, although only 14 years old, was elevated to the world stage.

We were especially fortunate to have with us veterans from Bexley RSL led by their president Mr Ken Markos, as well as Mr Ron Ryan, Mr Hugh Quinn and Mrs Lyla Thompson, the wife of recently deceased Jack Thompson, who was the former president of Bexley RSL.  Mr Thompson was instrumental in the planting of our Lone Pine tree on Chisholm Green, which is a permanent memorial and way that Bethany students can keep the ANZAC spirit alive. Mr Ken Marcos presented and unveiled a memorial plaque that has been laid at the base of the Bethany Lone Pine Tree.

Special thanks is extended to all the students and teachers that supported and led our service, as well as caring for our guests with extraordinary hospitality.
