Vinnies Camp Out

After school on Friday, 23 June, a number of students from Year 7-12 participated in the Vinnies campout run by the Year 12 SRC. Throughout the night, a number of activities were held such as true or false homelessness statistics and budgeting activities in order to raise awareness for homelessness and the situations they face every day, allowing us to understand just how fortunate we are to have basic things like food, shelter and clothing. Students had the opportunity to also assist those experiencing homelessness by sewing beanies and preparing hygiene packs and snack packs which will be given out on night patrol to provide some people with a few luxuries that they don’t often have. Cards of hope were also made, writing hopeful and inspiring messages which will also be given out by Vinnies which could just help make someone’s day a little brighter. After a basic dinner of soup and bread, we watched ‘The Pursuit of Happiness’ which highlights the struggles that some people face in order to provide for their families.

Amongst all the fun and community spirit of the night, all those who took part were able to gain insight to how they can assist those struggling with homelessness. Being a very cold night with no phones and a small meal for dinner, students had the opportunity to experience just a little bit of what it is like to have less than what many of us take for granted.

A massive thank you to all the teachers, Mrs Kennaugh, Ms Wood, Ms Georgiou, Ms Ibrahim, Ms Brennan, Mr Laguzza, Miss Grimm, Mrs Moroney, Ms Bailey, Ms Fing, Ms Napoli, Miss Taouk, Ms Straker and Miss Soles for giving up their Friday night to assist us so that the night ran smoothly. In particular, a big thank you to Miss Mirabello who was involved in helping the Year 12 Leadership Team plan and run the night. We are also extremely grateful for all those who donated money to St Vincent de Paul and Outreach Awareness, with the Bethany community raising almost $2000. If you would still like to donate, you can do so at

We cannot express our gratitude enough for those who immersed themselves in this event.
