On the 3rd of September, Bethany College hosted the Quarter Final round of the J.A. Thompson History Debating Competition, in which girls from Year 10 and 11 competed in after progressing through the preliminary rounds. The Year 10 team competed against Good Samaritan College and their topic was That World War One was Won on the Eastern Front. Year 11 competed against St Benedict’s College, and their topic was That Suetonius’ Work is Unfairly Maligned. Both debates were extremely difficult and required the teams to activate their higher order and abstract thinking.
Despite their best efforts, Year 10 lost their debate. Hopefully they will return next year to reclaim a victory for Bethany! The Year 11 team won their debate and will progress to the next round.
We would like to thank Mrs Pikis for her generous contribution of time and profound wisdom to the preparation and organisation of the debates, without which neither team could have progressed so far in the competition.
