Languages at Bethany

This past fortnight has seen a variety of different activities being offered by the Languages staff to our Bethany students.

POLYGLOTS – The Christmas Edition

Our final Polyglots meeting celebrated all things Christmas. Students participated in a competition to see how many Christmas greetings they could guess in different languages with the Junior team beating our Seniors in a close tussle. It was all light-hearted fun as students revealed their own family traditions whilst enjoying some Italian “panettone” cake and traditional Christmas music. Thanks to all our Polyglot members and we look forward to hosting more events in 2020!

What a great result by our Year 8 students in our inaugural Inter-school Italian competition! We challenged St. Patrick’s Strathfield and St. Mary’s Cathedral College and achieved 2nd place. A trophy has been organised for the winning school and we look forward to the challenge again in 2020.

The Languages faculty has organised prizes of K-mart gift vouchers to our Top 3 students in the competition. Congratulations to:

1st – Erela Jimenez

2nd – Bilha Baby

3rd – Margaret Sarmiento

Our students in Year 10 Italian, Year 9 Japanese and Year 8 Italian will have all completed their ACER online language competition by the end of this week. Results are already available for our senior group with many scoring Distinction or High Distinction grades. Congratulations to the following students:

Vikky Clements Salgado, Catia Di- Santo, Elly Vazouras, Kiara Vitale and Lily Perenara.

One of the highlights on the Year 8 calendar would have to be GELATO DAY! This year was no exception with all students given the opportunity to interact with a professional gelato vendor (their Italian teacher) in Italian and order one (or two!) delicious flavours on a cone – is there a more fulfilling way of using your language skills?? Nothing motivates a Language learner like food!

A new initiative led by Mrs. Colreavy has become a raging success – much like the art form itself, Anime! Scores of students have joined together to discuss and create amazing images and simply make connections with students from all year groups. The Christmas edition is sure to be a hit with students invited to wear their favourite anime-inspired clothing or accessories. Here are the first impressions of Anime Club president:

My name is Katelyn Kantarovski, the newly appointed Anime and Manga president.

At lunch on Tuesday the 26th November, the Anime and Manga club had its second meeting and we had a Pocky party. At the beginning Mrs Colreavy put on the first episode of My Hero Academia and placed some paper at the front for those who wished to draw. We all just drew or watched the anime. Near the end of lunch the club president and vice president were chosen. Anna Sequeira was chosen as the vice president and me the president. We had a blast today and I am excited to plan more activities and events with Mrs Colreavy and Anna.

Looking forward to going to  Anime and Manga club next Monday at our big anime Christmas event!
