Screen Time Habits for Good Eye Health

The Wellbeing Survey conducted in Term 3 revealed that Bethany students are spending an increased amount of time on their devices, both for learning and leisure.

About 70% of students in Year 7- 10 spend between 1-4 hours a day on social media.

Approx. 50% of Year 11 and 12 students spend 3-4 hours a day on social media.

Dr Kristy Goodwin from Parenting Ideas has some simple strategies to help keep children and teenagers sight healthy and in optimum condition.

  • Keep an eye on their eyes. Be alert for symptoms and take them to an optometrist if the symptoms persist.

  • Teach them the 20/20/20/20 rule. Every 20 minutes take a break from the screen

  • Remind them to close their eyes to give their brains a rest

  • Encourage them to keep all devices at an  arm’s length distance from their eyes

  • Make sure the room has appropriate lighting to not strain their eyes

  • Encourage them to head outdoors and get some fresh air and sunlight.
