Together, We Give

Together, We Give

By Penny Kalantzis

The Together, We Give Programme is an inaugural Year 7 and 8 initiative that aims to encapsulate the school motto to “Act justly, love tenderly and walk humbly with your God”. Bethany College is committed to helping the community through social justice activities. Although the programme is optional, it is highly recommended that all students in Years 7 and 8 participate. There are many fun activities such as; cooking dinner for your family, shopping for your grandparents, gardening for your family or friends, leading grace before family meals and so much more!!!

The whole purpose of this initiative is to encourage students to take time out of their everyday life to give back to the community and lend a helping hand, especially during these unprecedented times where small actions can make a big difference. The programme is based on a point system in which every activity is worth a different point. The goal is to reach 20 points. There are booklets available in the library containing more information and a Google classroom has been made, the code is: pssar6j. Feel free to join. Once you have completed the programme, you will receive a certificate of completion and it will be recognised on your Semester 2 report. The first person who completes the programme in their year group will win a prize so start now!!!

As Christians, it is important to GIVE as our role model Jesus did. Jesus performed many miracles such as feeding the 5 000, healing the paralysed man, making the blind man see and making the deaf man hear. Jesus died on the cross for the sake of our salvation and was therefore extremely generous and giving. These are qualities we must aspire to have as Christians. Although we cannot perform miracles like Jesus did, we must endeavour to live in accordance with God’s word and give back to our family, friends and our Bethany community.

Conclusively, this wonderful programme is definitely something to consider being a part of as our goal as a Catholic school is to uphold Christian values which involves giving. Also, when you give, you will receive. Although you may not receive a tangible item as a reward, giving back is rewarding as it fills your heart and soul with joy in the knowledge that you have contributed to making someone else’s day that much better.

2 Corinthians 9:6-8

“Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously. Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.”
