What’s Been Happening in Religious Education

World Youth Day 2019

The next international World Youth Day celebration will be held on Panama from January 22 – 27, 2019.  The event will be hosted during the winter months to avoid the country’s rainy season.

Where is Panama?

Panama is the southernmost country in Central America.

Panama’s Patron Saint is Santa María La Antigua. In English, she is known as Our Lady of La Antigua, and is one of several invocations of the Virgin Mary. She is commemorated on the Third Sunday of January, which in 2019 is January 20 – just two days before the 2019 World Youth Day Week officially begins.

The main language spoken is Spanish.

Whilst this celebration is some time away, it is time now to start thinking about whether or not our students in Year 10 and 11 in 2019 (current year 8 and 9 students) would like to participate in this exciting event and to start planning for this.

WYD 2019 Theme

The theme for the 34th World Youth Day, 2019 is, “I am the servant of the Lord. May it be done to me according to your word.” (Lk 1:38).

The verse comes from Luke’s Gospel account of the birth of Jesus being foretold, when the angel Gabriel came to Mary announcing that she would conceive and bear a son that she would call ‘Jesus’. Despite the initial confusion (“How can this be, since I have no husband?”), Mary gave her firm assent and trust to God by saying ‘May it be done to me according to your word.’
