What’s Happening in Religious Education
The Month of Mary
“The month which the piety of the faithful has long dedicated to Mary, the Mother of God. Our heart rejoices at the thought of the moving tribute of faith and love that will be paid to the Queen of Heaven in every corner of the earth. For this is the month during which Christians, in their churches and their homes, offer the Virgin Mother more fervent and loving acts of homage and veneration; and it is the month in which a greater abundance of God’s merciful gifts comes down to us from our Mother’s throne”. – Mense Maio, Pope Paul VI,1965
May 13 marks the anniversary of the first of six apparitions of the Virgin Mary to three shepherd children of Fatima, Portugal. Lucia dos Santos (aged 9) and her cousins Francisco and Jacinta Marto (aged 8 and 6, respectively) were tending sheep in central Portugal in 1917 when they had a vision of a woman surrounded by light who identified herself as the Lady of the Rosary. She exhorted them to pray the rosary for world peace and, over the course of her six apparitions, gave the children three ‘secrets.’ The second secret was a prediction of the end of WWI and a prediction of the beginning of WWII as well as a request to consecrate Russia to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. In 1942, Pope Pius XII consecrated the whole of humanity, implicitly including Russia to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. On March 25 2022, Pope Francis consecrated Russia and Ukraine to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. I offer a Hail Mary for our Blessed Mother to expedite a peaceful resolution to this current conflict and encourage you to pray the Rosary during the month of May, as we continue to pray for world peace like the children of Fatima.
Ave Maria, gratia plena, the Lord is with thee. Blessed are thou amongst women
and blessed is the fruit of thy womb Jesus. Holy Mary Mother of God, pray for us
sinners now and at the hour of our death.
Mary, the Mother of God is the Mother of all mothers and as mothers, we model ourselves on her great love, sacrifice, compassion, care and patience. What a beautiful sight it was to have our Bethany College mothers, grandmothers and mother figures gathered, as Father Janusz celebrated Mass and we heard our Choir sing for the first time in a long time. A very big thank you to Mrs Samardzic, Assistant Religious Education Coordinator, for her significant role in the preparation of this Mass.
Wishing you a very happy Mother’s Day on Sunday!
Religious Education and Mission Term 2
Our service program, Together We Serve is growing! This program is only four months old and already has 56 participants. A huge thank you to Miss Jones, Youth Ministry Coordinator, who continues to guide our students in prayer and service activities such as helping at Open Day, packaging St Vincent de Paul snack packs, saying grace before the evening meal and assisting parents and elderly neighbours with domestic duties.
This Term, we look forward to weekly Mass with St Mary’s Star of the Sea Primary School. A Bethany class will be joined by a SMSS class to celebrate Mass each Friday in St Michael’s Church as we look to strengthen our relationship through collaborative initiatives. Later in the year, we will join forces to package the St Vincent de Paul Winter Appeal items.
Other significant events include Year 12 Retreat in Week 5, Year 10 Spirituality Day in Week 7 and Bethany Day in Week 8.
